John Chapter 9 Study Notes

1And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
2And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
3Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. John 9: 1-3

The whole theme of this chapter is physical blindness as a type and shadow of spiritual blindness
-All men are born spiritually blind (ie. in sin)
-The disciples (and the pharisees later), incorrectly focus on sin, trying to assign blame
Jesus doesn’t focus on the sin, but rather the glory of God’s Grace (see Exodus 34, verse 7 points out sin, but they miss out on His grace mentioned prior)

6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. Exodus 34: 6-7

Jesus heals the man of his physical blindness, and also heals his spiritual blindness later on
-The pharisees in contrast see physically, but are blind spiritually
-Because the pharisees do not acknowledge their spiritual blindness, they remain in darkness… they cannot accept Jesus (who is the Light of the world) and be healed of their blindness/sin

39And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
40And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?
41Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth. John 9: 39-41

God is the great Author.  Sometimes bad things can be brought on by sin, but other times, bad things can just be there due to the world’s fallen state and there is no one to blame (think of Job’s ‘friends’ trying to accuse him of some hidden sin).  In the end though, these bad circumstances can be used to show God’s Grace and bring Him glory.

4I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. John 9: 4-5

The NASB more accurately renders verse 4 as: “We must carry out the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.”
Typically, we can work at night.  The Sabbath is the only time when we can not work.  Is there a night that cometh, when men can no longer work, and Jesus (and the people who have His Holy spirit) is no longer in this world?  As stated previously, Jesus fulfilled the first 4 Spring feasts (Leviticus 23, the ones we are to remember) in perfect timing on His 1st coming… He will fulfill the last 3 Fall feasts also in perfect timing on His 2nd coming.

https://www.hebrew4christians.com/Holidays/Fall_Holidays/Yom_Kippur/yom_kippur.html (The Day of Atonement in particular.  Hebrew custom was the Feast of Trumpets (Month 7, Day 1) was a call to forgiveness to all who have wronged you.  This was to be done by the Day of Atonement (Month 7, Day 10).  Whatever your status was on the Day of Atonement, set your status for the whole year (righteous or unrighteous).  This is a type and shadow of the Day of Atonement to come on Jesus‘ return, where we are to have Grace and Forgiveness for all who have wronged us, though in this case, it doesn’t set our status for the year, it sets our status for eternity)

Verses 4 and 5 point to a pre-Wrath Rapture [not pre-Trib], where those who have the Light of Jesus in them, will be raptured up, leaving only darkness behind on the earth, and the 7 Vials of Wrath from Revelation to fall on those who remain (note the 7 vial judgements fall on ALL the earth (Rev 16), while the 7 trumpet judgements only fall on 1/3rd (Rev 8-9).  Also note the protection given to those with God’s seal during the 5th trumpet judgement (Rev 9:4).  The Trumpet judgements are part of the tribulation, which believers will endure, but the Vial judgements are God’s wrath and not meant for believers.

6When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
7And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. John 9: 6-7

Spitting on the ground and creating clay was considered work, and thus a Sabbath violation.  As was applying medicine (ie: annointing the eyes).  This infuriated the pharisees.

19Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
20And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.
21Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
22And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
23Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. John 20: 21-23

Just as Jesus is sent by the Father, so Jesus sends us

The pharisees are full of unbelief.  They are focused on the supposed Sabbath violations, rather than on the miracle of a blind man being healed, prophesied in Isaiah 42: https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Isaiah-42-6_42-7/  .  They go so far as to inquire of the parents, and coercing the man to give them a different answer.  The man only responds with the truth: “He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.” John 9:25, again taking the focus off sin, and back to the amazing miracle that was performed.

26Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?
27He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
28Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’ disciples.

The Pharisees refuse to learn from Jesus.  They only stick to the Law or Old Covenant.  They refuse to be under the New Covenant of Grace.
Again: “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” John 1:17

35Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
36He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?
37And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
38And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him. John 9: 35-38

I realize the links here re: Modern Day Israel may be difficult for some to hear.  I speak the Truth in Love, and as we talked about in the study, Salvation has nothing to do with genetics, it is fully dependant on coming to a trusting faith in Jesus.  There is no hate or anti-Semitism here.  I attach these links so you will not be deceived.  If a nation rejects Jesus, why should you be convinced to follow that nation?
