John Chapter 7 Study Notes

Here’s a recap for Chapter 7.  Topics discussed last night: Why many of the Pharisees had a hard time believing, the blood of Jesus, thinking differently from the world, C.S. Lewis’ classic argument for Jesus as God, and the sovereignty of God.

1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him. John 7:1

44 “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” John 8:44

John Hyrcanus, a descendant of the Maccabeans, who served as leader and high priest of the Judeans, conquered Idumea (Edom) and forced them to become Jewish converts and incorporated them into the Jewish nation.    When Herod, an Edomite, came to power, he solidified his position by appointing Idumean relatives into positions of power (ie. as Pharisees).  Many of the Pharisees were Edomites.

6 Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is always ready.
7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. John 7:6-7

Jesus‘ brethren, would be more accurately described as half-brothers and sisters.  He was the only begotten Son of God.  The other siblings were begotten of Joseph.  Here’s a testimony from Ron Wyatt detailing Jesus‘ blood and how it only had 24 chromosomes.

The people that rule this world are accomplishing their objectives.  I would agree that >90% of what  the large majority of people believe is false, including Evolution, true World History, the truth behind current events, who is running things behind the scenes, what’s important in life, the meaning of life, the truth behind medicine and health, true science, the supernatural, Spiritual matters, God’s character, the true nature of our “universe”, etc.

And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people. John 7:12
C.S. Lewis’ classic trilemma.  Jesus can never be claimed to be just a good, moral teacher.  He claimed to be God.  Therefore, that leaves us with only one of 3 options to think about Him… He must be either a Liar, or a Lunatic, or He is indeed Lord.  Calling Him just a good, moral teacher is incorrect… He did not leave us with that option (we would be rejecting Him as Lord).

30 I and my Father are one.
31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. John 10: 30-33

There are some fools in this world today (“the new Atheism”) who would try to call Him a 4th option, a Legend, trying to claim that either He didn’t exist, or that his claims and feats were remarkably exaggerated.  I’ve attached a few replies to this silly contention, but the fact there are over 5800 manuscripts of the New Testament, whereas the next closest competitor, Homer’s Iliad has only about 1700 copies. is a good start.  Anyone wanting to claim Jesus as a Legend, is the actual Liar or Lunatic.

30 Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. John 7:30
We touched on God’s will vs. man’s will, and how God is sovereign.  It was the will of these men to take Jesus, likely to stone Him for blasphemy, but God’s will and timing overruled in the situation.  God’s sovereignty is a complex discussion, which we’ll get more into later, but as we say in the Lord’s prayer, “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven“.
