John Chapter 3 Study Notes

“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” John 3:5 KJV

Jesus clarifies what being “born again” (or more correctly in Greek, “born from above”) means, being born both of water and Spirit.  This was a shock to Nicodemus, who thought as a Hebrew who followed the 10 commandments, and 100s of other ordinances, he was already good in God’s eyes.  As we know from Ephesians 2:8-9: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. It is God’s work.  Nicodemus, as a master of Israel, should have known this, especially from understanding Leviticus, the picture of the Tabernacle (both of which point to the cleansing and redeeming work of Jesus), but also Ezekiel 36 (notice all the “I wills”, God is doing all the work)

24 For I will take you from among the nations, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.

25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.

26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

Here’s an excellent video from D.A. Carson explaining being born of water and spirit (born again):

Hebrew is read from right to left, and in the most ancient form of Hebrew, pictographic, the characters are interpreted as Hand-Behold-Nail-Behold.  God’s plan of coming as Jesus, and being crucified on the cross, is revealed in His very name, and was known right from the beginning.

13And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?

14And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

15And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. Exodus 3: 13-15

God has a name and it is pronounced Yahuah (YAH-oo-ah), not Jehovah (no J in Hebrew), or Yahweh (no W in ancient Hebrew).  In some bibles, it is written as the tetragrammation, YHWH (though more correctly should be YHUH).  The letters (R->L) are yod-hey-uau-hey.    It means I-AM-THAT-I-AM.  His Son’s name, reflects His character, I-AM-SAVES.  43 I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. John 5:43

“He must increase, but I must decrease.” John 3:30 KJV

“Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.” Hebrews 8:5 KJV

The tabernacle is a picture of heaven, and as discussed, represents our walk with God, as we grow in spiritual maturity.  This next video pretty much explains it all, so I’ll let it talk for itself.
