We talked about different roles the Romans and Jews had in Jesus’ crucifixion, the true location of Golgotha, and then prophecies around the crucifixion fulfilled specifically Daniel 9:24-27.
——————————————————————————————————————————————————
1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.
4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.
5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man! John 19: 1-5
v1 scourging was a very brutal form of punishment, causing significant and sometimes fatal blood loss. Roman soldiers would take turns inflicting inferomedial wounds along the back, thus creating the stripes mentioned in Isaiah 53:5
v2-3 the Romans mock Jesus as King
v4-5 Pilate thought the scourging would be enough but we see later it was not. The Jewish leaders wanted him dead. The line “Behold the man” comes from Zech 6:12. Jesus is the Branch (Zech 3:8). Pilate is speaking out spiritual Truth here and the Jewish leaders knowingly reject Jesus as the Branch.
And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD Zech 6:12
Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH. Zech 3:8
——————————————————————————————————————————————————
6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;
9 And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
v6-7 The Jewish leaders true motives come out. They accuse Jesus of blasphemy (
Leviticus 24: 14-16) for calling himself the Son of God, which in their view, is equating himself with God. They want Jesus dead, but want to keep themselves “clean”, so they want the Romans to kill him. As we know from Jesus’ Mount of Olives sermon, even though one might not be committing the physical act of murder, to hate your brother is committing murder in your heart.
v8-9 Romans believed in gods, and that these gods had children (recall Nephilim, offspring of Fallen Angels). We also know his wife warned him earlier about having nothing to do with Jesus in
Matthew 27:19 He asks Jesus where he is from, but Jesus does not answer
v10-11 Pilate gets frustrated and proclaims his power over Jesus. Jesus says he has no power over Him at all other than what’s been allowed by God. While Pilate still commits sin out of ignorance, the greater sin is among the Jews and their leaders for knowingly delivering Jesus to be killed. In the words of Peter…
22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— 23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. Acts 2:22-23——————————————————————————————————————————————————
12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. John 19: 12-15
v12 the Jewish leaders up the ante by saying Pilate would be going against Caesar by not killing Jesus
v14 it’s about 6am at this point
v15 the Jews outright reject Jesus as King at this point and proclaim Ceasar as their King. As believers, Jesus is meant to be King, no other… no political leader, no royal, only Jesus. When the Israelites called for King Saul, it was not what God had desired for them, but he allowed it…
“And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.” John 12:32 (He is the only one who should be lifted up in our hearts)
——————————————————————————————————————————————————
16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:
18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. John 19: 16-18
v17, Golgotha means “place of the skull”. There is a tradition that Jesus’ crucifixion was in Jerusalem at the site of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Constantine’s mother had “divined” this about 300 years later. More accurately, it should be placed north of Jerusalem, outside the city walls, near a cliff face that looks like a skull…
https://www.ronwyatt.com/new_written_account (Amazing testimony of how the Ark of the Covenant was moved out of Jerusalem by the prophet Jeremiah, just before the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem (597 BC). It would be placed about 15-20 feet under Jesus’ future Crucifixion site, over 600 years before He was crucified! And more amazing still, it would be left undisturbed until rediscovered in the 1980s by amateur archaelogist Ron Wyatt in the 1980s – a man led by the Holy Spirit, not by Academics who are only led by man’s wisdom.)

19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. John 19: 19-22
v19 Romans do this almost sarcastically to proclaim their authority over nations they’ve conquered
v21 The Jewish leaders want written that Jesus only
said He was their king (still another denial of Jesus)
v22 Even unknowingly, Pilate is being used a vessel for God’s Truth… it is written, and will not change

23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. John 19: 23-24
v23 To clarify, Jesus’ outer garments were divided, but His undergarmnent / tunic / coat could not be torn, and the y cast lots for it. The undergarment was the same worn by the High Priest, see
Exodus 28:32 as Jesus was the High Priest who would offer the Passover sacrifice (Himself). Woven without seam reflects his sinless life.
v24 The Scripture fulfilled here is Psalm 22:18 “They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.”

25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. John 19: 25-27
v26-27 Recall
Matthew 12: 46-50 where Jesus’ mother and brothers stood by while He was preaching. The emphasis here is that it is not about the physical family or genetics, but rather spiritual the spiritual family that Jesus is being called to create (Spiritual Israel rather than physical Israel)

28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. John 19: 28-30
v28 Recall Psalm 69:21 “They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.”, where gall = bitter herb
v29 In His thirst, they mocked him by giving him vinegar. Hyssop has a cleansing effect
v30 Recall
Daniel 9: 24-27 , Jesus’ 70 week mission is accomplished,
“It is finished”. This prophecy, as we’ve discussed previously, is massively misinterpreted by many seminaries and Bible teachers to push for a 7-year pre-trib rapture, over a 2500+ year period, often saying years represent weeks. This is not biblical. Read the passage plainly for what it says. 70 weeks are 70 weeks, not 70 years, not 490 years, and definitely not covering a period of 2500+ years. In Revelation, there is never any mention of 7-year periods, only 1260 days, 42 months, or 3.5 years. What happens is, false teachers take a beautiful prophecy of Jesus’ 70 week ministry (they do not want people to believe Jesus is the Messiah), and replace it with some garbled deception that does not prepare believers for the Tribulation ahead (ie. they pray for escape rather than endurance).

31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.
33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:
34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
35 And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
v34 Note blood and water came pouring out. Our friend Albert made the point of where did the water come from? I’ve heard of some medical rationalizations for this, such as puncturing the pericardium, but perhaps this may have been another supernatural witness (miraculously generating water like he had generated wine at the wedding). Some Bible interpretations call the vinegar “sour wine”.
v36 Scripture fulfilled
Exodus 12:46, not a bone shall be broken
v37 Scripture fulfilled
Zechariah 12:10, and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced
v34-37
https://youtu.be/1JRl9NiKXT4?t=2143 (Amazing Video of the Blood and Water, along with the Holy Spirit as a witness for Jesus,
1 John 5: 6-8. I’d recommend the entire video, but follow the link from 35:43-41:00 how the Blood and Water poured onto the Ark of the Covenant, confirming the New Covenant God would create for all future believers (Spiritual Israel rather than Physical Israel)) Again, a testament to God’s Majesty and Authorship to arrange for the Ark to be right below Jesus’ crucifixion site, and to replicate the confirming of the Old Covenant when establishing the New Covenant. What we know as Old and New Testament is actually better interpreted as Old and New Covenant.)

38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
40 Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.
42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
v37-39 Just an amazing testimony how God will have people in all walks of life to see His will be done. Here we have a rich man and a Pharisee being used by God to preserve the body of Jesus. This reminds me of
1 Kings 19 when Elijah thinks he’s the only one left, but God tells him there are 7000 that have not bent the knee to Baal. Sometimes the enemy might seem overly massive, widespread, and powerful, but we must trust that God has His own network of believers that will overcome.
v41-42 Sepulchre = Garden Tomb, which as discussed earlier is nearby
