John Chapter 17 Study Notes

All of John Chapter 17 is a prayer by Jesus to the Father (He is the mediator).  v1-5 is for himself, v6-19 is for the disciples, and v20-26 are for all future believers.  Topics covered include Glorifying the Son and Glorifying the Father as a reciprocal relationship, and how it’s an example for us, Jesus passing on God’s teachings to the Disciples, Sanctification, Clean and Unclean, Common and Holy, and God’s long-term plan for Unity.

1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. John 17:1-5

Let’s talk about the word…

Glorify

v1-3 The hour has come for the Father to glorify the Son.  Glorification can only come after death, because it shows that Jesus has the power of Life over death.  Knowing Him is life eternal.
v4-5 This is a reciprocal relationship, as the Father glorifies the Son (by manifesting fruit and power through Him), the Son glorifies the Father (through trust and obedience and allowing these to manifest)

6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.
8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
John 17: 6-10

God’s name is I AM THAT I AM and Jesus has shown God’s word (teachings) throughout the book of John.  He has revealed God’s true nature (see John 14: 8-11).  Because they have received the teachings, and trust that Jesus is from the Father, Jesus prays (mediates) for them, and is glorified in them (which as we read in v2, equates to eternal life)

12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. John 17:!2

There are a few scriptures which this refers to:

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. John 17: 16-19

Sanctification

There is a Holiness continuum.  Whereas the world likes to see things as just 2 categories, Good (forgiven, clean, righteous) and Evil (unforgiven, unclean, unrighteous), God has a 3rd category, Holy (set-apart, special).  There is a baptism by Water, which can cleanse us, and make us acceptable (think of the thief on the Cross) but it is the baptism by Fire, the Holy Spirit, which can purify us and make us Holy (think of the disciples after receiving the Holy Spirit in Acts 2).

Holiness

Here’s a talk from Bible teacher, David Pawson. This is basically Leviticus summed up nice and simple (consecrate = sanctify).  One additional note here is that Unclean cannot be in the presence of Holy.

I meant to include this in the talk, but Jason reminded me of it:

Revelation 22.11-12

The same categories David Pawson refers to are here:
Ones Never Justified/Cleansed (Common, Filthy)
Ones once Cleansed, but Polluted themselves again (Common, Filthy)
Ones Cleansed, and stayed Cleansed (Common, Clean)
Ones Sanctified/Consecrated, and made Holy (Holy)

Unity

In John 17, 20-23, Jesus prays for Unity/Oneness for all future believers.  As Jesus (Yahusha) is in the Father (Yahuah), and the Father is in Him (upper circle), Jesus prays the future believers (anothen, born from above), be one with Them also.  As we read in Ephesians 4: 1-6 we are all unified in the Holy Spirit.  The Father is over all, and works through all, via the Holy Spirit.
