Acts Chapter 2 Pt 1 Study Notes

Can one pray in the Spirit without tongues?
Yes, Romans 8:26, but it's more of a shotgun approach, because you're praying out of your own mind, where some of what you may pray will be within God's will, and other things not. When we pray in tongues though, it is like a sniper rifle, very pinpoint and specific prayer, because it is the Holy Spirit praying, and though we might not know what we're saying, EVERYTHING is in God's will. These types of prayers ALWAYS get answered. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in My name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask Me for anything in My name, I will do it. John 14: 13-14 14 And this is the confidence that we have before Him: If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we already possess what we have asked of Him. 1 John 5: 14-15 We can pray, but the prayer must be in God's will for it to be answered. Most Christians do not have the confidence of always answered prayer because a lot of what they pray for is not in God's will. Praying in tongues ALWAYS prays out God's will for your life. Praying out of your own mind, is praying TO God Praying in tongues, is praying OF God (It is the Holy Spirit dwelling in you doing the praying) This is the gift that Jesus speaks of (John 14:15-26, John 16: 5-16, Luke 24:49, Acts 1:8) One other important note, God spoke the world into existence. When we pray, we need to speak. Simply asking God to help someone, or keep someone safe, in general terms, is not specific enough to get the job done. Intercessory prayer in tongues is very specific, and involves commanding angels, and suppressing demons or spirits, so that God's will can be done. We need spiritual weapons to fight a spiritual battle (Ephesians 6:12 and 6:18)
Ephesians 6:12 and 6:18)
Is tongues for everybody, or only certain people as the Holy Spirit gifts it?
This comes from Corinthians 12:11 KJV, "But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will." That word there dividing is actually better interpreted as distributing or apportioning, as it is in other translations Cor 12 speaks of the different gifts the Holy Spirit gives (9 are mentioned), some getting this gift and some getting that gift. The word 'dividing' would seem to imply all or none. This is not correct. Any Spirit-filled believer can operate in ALL NINE of the gifts, to different degrees, and thus 'distributing' or 'apportioning' is the better term. Remember that ALL 120 Disciples in the Upper Room received the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in Tongues Also in 1 Cor 14, Paul wishes they all spoke in tongues and that he thanks God for speaking more in tongues than them all. The gift is available to all (and just to clarify, 1 Cor 14 is a comparative of Tongues for Prophecy vs. Tongues for Self-Edification. Paul prefers they have both, but even more so Prophecy)
Is it possible to pray the wrong things in tongues?
No. When you ask from the Father, He will provide you with a good gift. 7 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. 9 Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! Matt 7: 7-9 With that said, in one of the links from the talk (click button below) there is a video of a false type of spirit baptism, where people get touched on the forehead and start laughing uncontrollably, often showing strange tics. This is a false spirit, specifically a kundalini spirit, that gets passed on in false churches. This is demonic and not of God.

Does satan know what we pray in tongues?
No, and that is specifically one of the great advantages of tongues. There are spirits all around us, and it's very easy for them to pick up on our humanly prayers. Praying in tongues goes directly to God, only He understands, and then he sends his angels out to execute the prayer. Satan has ZERO power to stop it. For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 1 Cor 14:2
What to do when I have a deep unction to pray?
This is when praying is tongues is most important. Often times, God puts in our heart to pray deeply in the quiet seasons of our lives, to prepare us for the more tumultuous seasons of our lives (thanks Bernie and Pauline for sharing). Praying in tongues allows you to go deep into prayer and pray for the times ahead. Often during the tumultuous seasons, there is no time to pray, but it's good that we had prayed in those quiet seasons. One of the first people I encountered that spoke in tongues told me that Fasting and Prayer (in Tongues) can be stored for later use. This is something that really stood out to me at the time, and really makes sense to me now. If the unction is there, just do it, because He knows what's ahead, while we do not. I like the analogy of driving on the highway, and coming up to a turn, not knowing what's coming around the corner, but He does.
I already pray, why should I pray in tongues?
It was beautifully stated during discussion of the "Oneness" of God Praying in tongues, is praying out God's will for your life Praying of your own mind, is praying out your own will for your life God wants us in unity, not each of us going our separate ways We are all members of the Body of Christ, of whom Christ is the head. We are all meant to have the Mind of Christ. 12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 1 Cor 12: 12-13 Praying in Tongues is praying out the Holy Spirit / Mind of Christ, so although there are many members, there is Unity of Purpose If I could choose to pray out my will vs. God's will, I'd rather pray out God's will If we can humble ourselves enough, we should see that God's will should be our will anyways [and it's actually better than our will] It is this sense of self that gets in the way
If we're praying from the Spirit, does that mean that our Mind just shuts off?
Yes and No Yes in that Cor 14:14 "For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful." The mind has nothing to contribute to the prayer and so it should shut off However, with that said, No, because the mind can be doing other things While one can pray in tongues in their prayer closet / secret place, one can also pray in tongues while doing other things I personally (and heard of many others) that pray in tongues while driving, reading, watching TV I've even been in conversations with people and prayed in tongues very quietly under my breath without moving my lips Remember, we are Body, Soul(Mind) and Spirit. The Spirit can easily be praying while our Mind is doing something else. One other thing to be aware of... Praying out of the Mind is usually done in 10-15 minutes, after praying everything you could possibly think of. Praying out of the Spirit allows you to "pray without ceasing." I relayed a story of how I drove home from Prince Albert, SK, praying in tongues [quietly] the whole time for 6hrs, while interacting with my kids in the back from time to time. There's many times also though where Holy Spirit's woken me up in the middle of the night, and I leave the room for an hour or two to pray in tongues, and then go back to bed. The Mind can be engaged or not, but it is the Spirit that prays.
I've tried so hard and can't get it, maybe it's not for everybody?
As discussed earlier, it is for ALL disciples, all that would be taught by Jesus As mentioned in the talk, I'd suggest this video if you still can't get tongues: (Video below by David Diga Hernandez. Everything you need to know about speaking in tongues) I mention the specific barriers in the talk, but collectively, Ego, specifically sense of Self, is the overarching problem The only proper response is to say "Thank you God, for this gift and I receive it. I want to pray out YOUR will, and am willing to move MY will out of the way" We need to die to Self... Our will needs to become God's will
